Moud

Moud Rugs

Fine Persian Carpets from Khorasan with Detailed Ornamentation

Moud rugs, also known under the alternative spellings Mud, Mood, or Maud, are among the finer classic Persian carpets from eastern Iran. They originate from the city of Moud in the province of South Khorasan, a traditional weaving region known for its exceptional craftsmanship and precision.
Moud rugs are renowned for their intricate Herati and Mahi patterns, elegant medallion compositions, and harmoniously balanced yet contrast-rich color palettes. They combine classical Persian ornamentation with timeless interior aesthetics and are considered a well-balanced provenance between decorative richness and structured clarity.
The city of Moud is located in South Khorasan, a historic carpet-weaving region in northeastern Iran. Since the 20th century, Moud has developed into an independent and clearly recognizable provenance. Unlike nomadic carpets, Moud rugs are primarily produced in workshops that follow precise design guidelines.
They are characterized by clean line work, balanced proportions, high knot density, and meticulous detailing. This structured workshop tradition gives Moud rugs their distinctive discipline in design and execution, making them a highly respected provenance within classical Persian carpet weaving.
A defining feature of Moud rugs is the so-called Mahi or Herati pattern. This design consists of small floral elements arranged rhythmically across the field, creating a fine, almost textile-like surface structure.
Several design variations exist. In allover patterns, the Herati motif extends evenly across the entire field, resulting in a calm and universally adaptable appearance. In medallion Moud rugs, an elaborately crafted central medallion—often star-shaped, hexagonal, or octagonal—dominates the field and is complemented by harmoniously coordinated corner spandrels and borders. Garden or panel designs divide the field into rectangular segments reminiscent of Persian garden layouts, giving the carpet a structured and narrative character.
Despite their level of detail, Moud rugs never appear overloaded. Their composition remains balanced and clearly defined.
Moud rugs are distinguished by an elegant and contrast-rich color palette. Deep navy and dark blue tones frequently dominate, combined with ivory, cream, or warm burgundy and red shades. Subtle accents in light blue, green, or black add additional depth.
The colors are carefully harmonized and refined. Compared to stronger and more intense provenances such as Bidjar, Moud rugs appear more controlled and sophisticated in their color composition. As a result, they create a representative yet harmonious presence within a space.
Moud rugs are traditionally crafted from high-quality, densely spun wool. The foundation is usually made of cotton, which provides structural stability and shape retention. In some versions, fine silk highlights are incorporated to subtly accentuate individual ornaments and add a gentle sheen.
With a medium to fine knot density ranging from approximately 200,000 to 400,000 knots per square meter, Moud rugs belong to the finer Persian weaving traditions. This density allows for precise rendering of complex patterns while ensuring durability and everyday practicality.
Thanks to their structured ornamentation and balanced color composition, Moud rugs can be integrated into a wide variety of interiors. They harmonize beautifully in classic and elegant living spaces while also providing a refined accent in modern or minimalist settings. They are equally well suited for country-style interiors and representative dining or study areas.
A Moud rug brings structure, depth, and cultural substance to a space without appearing dominant or overly decorative.
